Intensive One-to-One English Courses

Your Programme

The programme is yours. It is one-to-one and the focus is you.  You can use the time to concentrate on any area of language that you choose and we will make it as relevant and beneficial to you as we can.

You may have some very definite ideas about what you want to cover in your course, or you may have a less fixed but general objective. Or then again, you may be looking for a course that simply allows you to engage with English in a free and explorative way.

It is always helpful to remember to manage your expectations and to be realistic with what can be achieved. Your wider, personal language journey is unlikely to be completed in a one or two week, pre-determined and fixed course you take at Berlitz Edinburgh and if you really want your language skills to  develop and strengthen  then you should see your personal language programme as a long-term, fluid and ongoing process.

An important part of that process may well be a period of study abroad with Berlitz Edinburgh and we want you to benefit as much as you can from that. So, during your time at Berlitz Edinburgh we can help you to explore ways to manage and use your English so that you are more confident and efficient with the language immediately as well as in the longer term.

We can also  help you to develop the kind of habits and rountines that will let you build language on your own and make you a more self-reliant learner.

Your beliefs and attitudes about language learning and use are important. They shape the way that you approach language and can have a major impact on your ability to communicate in English. So we are happy to discuss these with you to help you to become more self aware which we are confident will be of benefit to you.

We also want to help you to develop your skills in enjoyable ways, free of stress and pressure. And we want to make sure that we are focussing on the kind of language that you need for the contexts that are relevant to you.  This could mean focussing on a particular skill, such as presenting in English, or a function of language, such as ordering a meal or a specific area of language, such as the vocabulary associated with marketing or finance.

So, there are many possible aspects to your language programme. And in our experience we often find that  priorities can and do change and evolve as new perspectives are gained.  Because of this your programme can develop organically to adapt to the changes that you experience and there are no restrictions.  Everything is adaptable and flexible.

Of course there are some important things that are constant and fixed; all discussion that we have with you will be in English.  And because of this you will always be immersed in the language and so will continually be using and strengthening your skills.

Half-Day Schedules

These are the most popular solutions for those students who have other significant commitments while in Edinburgh, or who want to combine studying with a holiday in this beautiful part of the UK.  This type of schedule means that you can concentrate on classroom study for half-a-day and then can go out and use the language immediately – either by sightseeing and taking part in tours, museum visits, seeing the university colleges etc, or maybe because you have business meetings to attend while you are in the UK.

Students can choose whether they prefer to attend their lessons in the mornings or in the afternoons – whichever fits in best with their other plans.

Semi-Private English Courses

As well as one-to-one lessons, we also offer other fixed-schedule courses where you are in a class with one other student.  You can either do this as a half-day course or you can combine a morning of semi-private lessons with a session in the afternoon which is individual (the ‘Combo’ Course).

This is the perfect solution for those students for whom the budget is more of a consideration, or who enjoy learning with another student.

The only difference to the individual programme is that, as semi-private lessons have two students, the programme will not be individually created but will follow existing Berlitz General or Business syllabuses.  Therefore, if the objectives of the course are very specific (for example exam preparation), then we do not recommend the semi-private option.

Semi-Private Course

2 students
£750/student per week
  • 09:00-12:45 – Semi Private (2 students)
  • Monday to Friday
  • This course is the most economical option as you will be in your lessons with another student of the same, or similar, level.  The advantage is that you can do a variety of activities together.  The only consideration is that the other students’ needs may be very different to your own and the instructor will have to include material for everyone.
